U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo speaks during a press briefing in Washington D.C., the United States

Pompeo’s visit comes at a time when the ties between Beijing and Washington have hit rock bottom due to the ongoing nasty trade war.

He will reach Beijing after meeting North Korean leader Kim Jong-un on Sunday in Pyongyang.

During Pompeo’s visit, China and the US would exchange views on bilateral ties and regional and international issues of common concern, the Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying said in a statement.

There seems no let-up in tensions between the world’s two largest economies who have slapped each other’s goods with tariffs worth billions.

Besides, US imposing sanctions on Chinese military unit and officials for buying Russian aircraft and Beijing’s tit-for-tat move to cancel security talks with Washington have added fuel to the fire.

Pompeo will also travel to Japan, South Korea between September 6 and September 8.
