Medical start-up, TheSocialMedwork, a fully licensed and regulated medicines intermediary, has a mission to make newly developed medicines for serious and life-debilitating conditions available to everyone. Using their service patients suffering from serious conditions can import overseas approved medicines, such as FDA and EMA approved drug, Aimovig.

Aimovig is the first and only FDA and EMA approved preventative treatment to block the calcitonin gene-related peptide receptor (CGRP-R) helping to reduce monthly migraine days and for some reduce by over 50%. Aimovig is available to order in the Middle East and will be delivered in around 12-21 days. Migraine, a neurological condition more prevalent among women, is a common ailment in the region, with limited local treatment options available to sufferers.

Prior to EMA approval, erenumab (Aimovig) was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration on May 17, 2018, and by Swissmedic on July 13, 2018 and in Australia by the TGA on July 3, 2018. After its initial FDA approval, TheSocialMedwork received 8,600 people showing interest in Aimovig within two weeks.

“People in the Middle East who suffer from migraine now have the opportunity to get access to the newest medicines from anywhere in the world,” says TheSocialMedwork founder, Sjaak Vink. “This new medicine is a breakthrough, according to the results from studies approved by the FDA and EMA, which is why it should be accessible to all of the Middle East. Our service makes just-developed medicines available for people everywhere at the same time. This medicine – and ones for cancer, ALS, MS or any other serious conditions – should be accessible to everyone in the Gulf and Middle East as soon as they are approved. Health is the a human right, and this is something we’ll continue to champion.”

Aimovig is just one of the 60 medicines available on the platform which include Orkambi (Cystic Fibrosis), Spinraza (Spinal Muscular Atrophy), and Radicut (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis). TheSocialMedwork has supported requests from over 120 countries and delivered almost 4,000 medicines to patients in 70 countries. Sufferers of debilitating and chronic diseases can now access vital new treatments months, even years, faster.

Over 20% of the TheSocialMedwork’s business is generated from the Middle East, including the UAE and wider GCC nations.

TheSocialMedwork is committed to ensuring the lowest public prices for its medicines placing social purpose over profit. No medicines are dispensed without a valid prescription and once ordered can be delivered to a pharmacy or hospital.

The medical startup was founded in 2014 the Netherlands by Sjaak Vink, James Heywood, Bernard Muller and Katrin Schepp. They saw how friends and family could have been treated treated more successfully if they had access to newly developed medicines quicker
