To celebrate the message of Sheikh Zayed and the very distinctive Idea of India’s unity in diversity, Ambassador of India to UAE, Mr Navdeep Suri and Mrs Mani Suri hosted a Suhoor at India House on 4th June which prominent Emaratis, Indians and other nationalities attended.

As a country that gave birth to the Hindu, Buddhist, Jain and Sikh faiths and is home to adherents of virtually every major religion, India takes a special pride in celebrating the festivals of all our main communities. Our calendar of national holidays includes Eid ul Fitr, Eid ul Adha and Eid Milad al Nabi, in addition to Diwali, Christmas, Buddha Purnima, Baisakhi and a host of others.

The holy month of Ramadan is celebrated throughout India by our 180 million strong Muslim community and we can proudly say that we are home to the world’s second largest Muslim population. Since our independence in 1947, we have had Presidents Dr. Zakir Hussain, Dr. Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed and Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam as three of our distinguished Heads of State. We have also had eminent Muslims in some of our other highest positions in government, in the judiciary and in our armed forces. Actors like Shahrukh Khan, Salman Khan and Aamir Khan are among the Bollywood stars that enjoy popularity around the world.

Indian Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi addressed his 42.5 million followers on Twitter with the message, “Greetings on the start of Ramzan. May this holy month enhance the spirit of togetherness, peace & harmony across the world.”

The spirit of tolerance, of respect for the customs and traditions of different faiths, of our abiding commitment to global peace and harmony is something that India shares strongly with the UAE. The legacy of Mahatma Gandhi and Sheikh Zayed lives true in all of us that binds our nations and our people to each other.
