Dubai Municipality has announced the launch of the world’s largest Waste To Energy (WTE) project at Warsan area. The project, which will be a global first in terms of treated waste capacity, will be engineered and constructed in a single batch whilst adopting the latest and most-advanced global technologies in the field.

The project aims to treat 1.82 million tons of solid waste annually, with a total net capacity of 171 MW of electricity, capable of providing power to 120,000 homes, equivalent to 2,000 skyscrapers equal in proportion to Burj Khalifa, and roughly 2% of the annual electricity consumption in Dubai. This landmark project will ultimately support Dubai’s vision of becoming the world’s most sustainable and intelligent city.

Engineer Hussain Nasser Lootah, Director General of Dubai Municipality speaks to the media.

The WTE project will achieve Dubai Municipality’s strategic goals and pillars of environmental protection, promote the sustainability of natural resources, integrated waste management, and diverting 100% of waste from landfills by 2030, which will significantly contribute to achieving Dubai’s Clean Energy Strategy of providing 75% of Dubai’s total power output from clean energy sources by 2050, ultimately reducing the city’s carbon footprint. It is also part of its 2021 vision of developing a happy and sustainable city by implementing pioneering sustainability practices.

The project reaffirms the vision of the wise leadership of Dubai and future oriented strategic goal of developing a prosperous and happy community that was envisioned by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, in terms of building a sustainable city for the future.

The waste to energy plant will be designed to treat the city’s solid waste as well as industrial and commercial waste. The facility will simultaneously recover the energy and treat the gases generated as a result of incineration. The grate transports the waste through the combustion chamber. The waste is thus also mixed and burned out completely.

Dubai Municipality has selected the renowned Swiss company Hitachi Zosen Inova in a joint venture with the Belgian construction company BESIX Group to build the world’s largest and first-class waste to energy plant for the Emirate of Dubai.
