Dubai Municipality recently organized a voluntary diving event to clean the seabed at Dubai Creek as part of the Dubai Day initiative, aimed at preserving the marine environment and raising awareness among boat owners to reduce dumping of waste at sea.
“The Municipality seeks to raise awareness among the community about the importance of preserving the land and marine environment, which are essential elements in the local environment,” said Dawood Al Hajiri, Director General of Dubai Municipality.
He pointed out that the cleanup of the Creek comes within the important environmental projects that Dubai Municipality is keen to provide for a clean marine environment free of pollutants in a manner that ensures the biological diversity of fish and its increase, purity and water quality.
Al Hajiri said that this project is one of the major environmental projects undertaken by Dubai Municipality in order to preserve the environment, the main feature of Dubai city, the preservation of marine life and the sustainability and cleanliness of the beaches of Dubai.
He pointed out that Dubai Municipality had organized a community-based voluntary activity in Khawaneej-2 area in response to “Dubai Day,” the initiative of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of the Executive Council, which was implemented by a volunteer team from Dubai Municipality, in coordination with the Waste Management Department and with the participation of more than 30 members of the community.
Al Hajiri stressed that the Municipality is very keen to instill environmental awareness among young people on the importance of marine environment, the role it plays through awareness campaigns involving them in cleaning campaigns and recycling waste collected from the seabed and creek and also creating awareness among the public, especially seafarers, boat owners, maritime transport workers, oil tankers and fishermen, as well as the development of sustainability projects related to the Dubai’s marine environment such as Dubai Creek, as it is one of the important environmental landmarks of the Emirate of Dubai and its lifeline, both old and new.
