‘Guruvandanam’ or ‘reverence to the guru’ is an annual initiation by the rasikas of Dubai, or the carnantic music lovers to promote the great compositions by greater composers of the previous generations. A praise to the guru, a prayer to the God and an annual feeling of joy to the audience is how the listeners, learners and the teachers of Guruvandanam see it. ‘Guruvandanam’ or ‘reverence to the guru’ is hence an annual initiation by the rasikas of Dubai, or the carnantic music lovers to promote the great compositions by greater composers of the previous generations.

‘Guruvandanam’ encourages young talent in Carnantic music to perform in front of an audience very large, whilst being accompanied by emerging instrumental artists in the Mridangam, Violin and the Keyboard. Since its inception of in 2016, it has been a tradition to bring the finest musicians of Carnatic music as chief guest. The chief guest acts as a teacher to the students of Guruvandanam as well as to the teachers and performers who perform at the event and also to the eagerly awaiting audience.

‘Guruvandanam’ has been structured from its initial count of students who will perform in the program, which will roughly match to around 250 students, to all the way to closing ceremony and dinner. Rigorous planning by teachers is done months before the comprehending program to prevent inertia of students to sing and to bring about a joyous unifying bond between teachers, students and parents.

Teachers first bring about students of all ages ranging from 7 to 17 years and divide them based on their location. The teachers also choose which great composer to obey to and what legendary compositions to inculcate in the program. Next will be the part of teaching the students at a specific date, time, place and tenure.

The students, after separately learning with their respective teachers, will meet up together as a whole and render the songs. The children are recorded live on Facebook and they are also singularly recorded for them to render the song, have their recording be posted on Facebook and be supported by heartfelt viewers.

By this time the booking of the hall and collection of sponsorships would have been done.  Finally commencing the program, after which the chief guest will perform. A closing ceremony will be held by distributing certificates to children, prizes to teachers and vote of thanks to the present Emarati’s and all who participated in the program.

Guruvandanam 2016 was devoted to Sri. Papanasam Shivam and his enthralling invention of the Rama Charita Geetam. Guruvandanam 2017 was devoted to Sri. Muthhuswamy Dikshitar and his stellar compositions including the English Notes. Guruvandanam 2018 is devoted to Sri. Purandara Dasa and his amazing compositions.
