In collaboration with five cultural partners representing influential sectors in the fields of media, heritage, arts, museums and technology, the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi, DCT Abu Dhabi, will organise the third edition of the Culture Summit Abu Dhabi 2019 from 7th to 11th April at Manarat Al Saadiyat in Abu Dhabi.

The partners are The Economist Events, which will programme the media stream and provide expertise in discussing issues related to information and its policies; UNESCO, to address the tangible and intangible heritage role in societal change; the Royal Academy of Arts, to curate and lead on the arts stream; the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and Foundation to explore how museums can shape the future of culture, and Google, to provide insights on the technology stream and to lead the discussion related to tech, arts and expected changes in culture.

Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, Chairman at DCT Abu Dhabi, said, “Over the last two years, the Culture Summit has attracted the attention of global stakeholders in various fields of cultural awareness and intellectual development. We welcome the global partners who will support the Summit with their extensive knowledge in the domains of culture, arts, media heritage and museum, and to drive dialogue on ways to contribute to the growth of contemporary societies in sustainable ways.”

Kay Westmoreland, General Manager, The Economist Middle East and Africa, said, “We are delighted to be appointed to programme the media stream of the Culture Summit Abu Dhabi 2019. We will bring the rigour of informed analysis and intelligent debate that The Economist is known for to life on stage at the forum. A selection of panel discussions chaired by our editors will discuss the changing face of journalism and the role it plays in influencing society.”

Ernesto Ottone-Ramirez, UNESCO’s Assistant Director-General for Culture, said, “Culture is implicated in every facet of sustainable development, because development is, above all, about people. It is about their needs, aspirations and fundamental rights as human beings. Culture, as the living embodiment of the histories, values and aspirations of people and communities, is deeply embedded in our lives and identities. Access to and participation in cultural life is essential to our well-being. If development is to be fair, inclusive and truly sustainable, people and their cultures must be placed at its heart.”

Tim Marlow, Artistic Director, Royal Academy of Arts, said, “The Royal Academy of Arts is delighted to be one of the partners in the 2019 Culture Summit in Abu Dhabi. The best arts institutions are always collegial and building cultural bridges seems more important now in a world increasingly threatened by conflict and division. We also are relishing the prospect of being able to stage and take part in a series of debates and discussions about the critical issues of our time and salute the vision and generosity of Abu Dhabi for enabling this to happen.”

Richard Armstrong, Director, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and Foundation, said, “The Culture Summit Abu Dhabi offers a timely opportunity to shape and lead a series of vital conversations about museums as platforms for dialogue and understanding. As we continue to work with the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi to develop the future Guggenheim Abu Dhabi, we are actively considering how the role of museums as stewards, conveners, and seekers can evolve with the needs and pace of the 21st century.”

Pierric Duthoit, Branding Sector Lead at Google MENA, said, “Technology plays a role in preserving the world’s diverse culture, making it universally accessible. Today, anyone with an internet connection can spin the globe and explore the world’s heritage virtually. We are very excited to be part of the Culture Summit Abu Dhabi 2019, showing how technology celebrates diversity and builds bridges between people.”
