Gatha bags Sheikh Hamdan Award

Top honour for Keralite student as she is selected to receive the prestigious Sheikh Hamdan Award in Dubai… reports Asian Lite News.

Sharjah Indian School student, Ms Gatha JJ, is all set to receive the 2018-19 Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Foundation’s academy award on April 30th. Gatha’s academic excellence, humanitarian activities, writing, painting and her magnanimous personality were all considered for the award.

“I was born in Kerala and raised there till seven years old. Being an avid reader, I participated in various competitions related to my academics, and even won the Spelling Bee conducted by Reliance, when I was six,” Ms Gatha said in a statement to Asian Lite News.

“I won District competitions in Quizzing and even competitions for Painting from the royal family. When I came along with my parents to UAE, I expanded my horizon in reading for many years. I started going out for science fairs when I was 14, helping me develop so many of my skills,” she added.

Gatha is the daughter of the Trivandrum, Konchiravila resident Mr Jayachandran Nair and Mrs Jayasree. Gautham is her sibling.

“I understood the need to give back to society and desired to volunteer my services and did so at many occasions like the MENA Games hosted by the Special Olympics, Relay for Life etc.,” she said.

“I took up many hobbies to spend my time, mainly art, reading and science. By the age of 16, I was extremely fortunate to release the best from my collection of poems I had written when I was 14. It was titled ‘Little to Somewhere’ and released at the Sharjah International Book Fair,” she continued.

“As of now, I’m preparing for the All India Entrance exam for medical aspirants so I can pursue my interest in medicine and later specialise in Oncology,” she added.

“I have been working towards awareness for the cause of Mental Health as it is one of the most important yet overlooked causes. Oncology, as a field requires a careful balance of both medical science and empathy, and that is why I wish to pursue it after careful contemplation. I would definitely plan and pursue more to enhance mental health among my peers as well as society,” she said.

“Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Foundations Distinguished Academic Performance Award has been a surprise and a blessing, and I will never cease to be grateful for the privilege of having the honor to receive the award as it will always push me to choose the better path. I believe that the award will be the inspiration I need to keep working for my goals,” she concluded.

The award which comprises of AED 30,000 cash and certificate will be handed over during a prestigious ceremony to be held in Dubai on April 30th 2019.
