The most prominent Indian in the Gulf greets fellow citizens, especially from the state of Kerala, during the festive season Vishu/Vaisakhi.

Mr Yusuff Ali MA, Chairman and Managing Director of Lulu Group, said the expatriates are going through a tough phase, but they will overcome the crisis through tough determination and dedication.

Keralaites are celebrating Vishu, the harvest festival of the south Indian state on April 14. It is coincide the Vaisakhi festival of Punjabis. It marks the harvest season and reflect the diverse culture of India. People celebrate Bihu, Poila Boishak & Puthandu – with vigour and fervour.

“We are all going through a very difficult time which we have never faced or experienced before in our lifetime,” Mr Yusuff Ali said in his message. “We can only pray for all mankind and for the whole world. Almighty God is the only decision-maker. During this painful time, I wish you all a safe Vishu filled with lots of love, peace and hope.”

Mr Yusuffali last week contributed Rs25 crores to the Prime Minister’s Citizen Assistance and Relief in Emergency Situations (PM-CARES) to combat coronavirus.

“I have humbly contributed INR25 Crores to the PM Cares Fund to support all relief works in India’s fight against the COVID-19,” Yusuffali said in a tweet.

Last month, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had created PM CARES Fund and appealed to all the countrymen to show their support for the cause. The prime minister is the chairman of the trust and its members include the defence minister, the home minister and the finance minister.

He made another donation of Dh100,000 to help feed workers struggling during the coronavirus pandemic in the UAE. The amount will be distributed among Indian community organisations and volunteers who are supporting low-income workers financially struggling due to COVID-19 related issues.

It gave a break-up of Dh50,000 to the Kerala Muslim Cultural Centre in Dubai, Dh25,000 for Abu Dhabi Islamic Centre and other volunteers who are tirelessly working with the local and Indian authorities to support community members in need.

Malayali expats in the UAE, the largest immigrant group in the Gulfcountry, are celebrating Vishu this year within their homes due to restrictions imposed amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

The festival of Vishu is usually celebrated with a lot of fanfare and typically sees a lavish ‘sadhya’ (meal) prepared. However, many Malayalis were opting for a simple meal this year due the Corona crisis.
