UNSC lauds Saudi efforts in Yemen

Saudi King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud.

The UN Security Council welcomed the efforts made by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to revitalize the Riyadh Agreement, stressing the importance of its rapid and effective implementation.

Reports have said that the Yemeni government and the Southern Transitional Council (STC) have accepted a proposal by Saudi Arabia designed to accelerate the implementation of the Riyadh Agreement.

The agreement includes proposals for a ceasefire between the warring factions and the formation of a government with representation from both northern and southern Yemen.

The Council affirmed its support for the political process in Yemen as contained in the relevant United Nations resolutions, including resolution 2216 (2015), as well as the initiative of the Gulf Cooperation Council and its implementation mechanism and the results of the National Dialogue Conference, a Saudi Press Agency report said.

This came in a press briefing by the Council after its virtual meeting on Wednesday, focusing on the situation in the Middle East and Yemen.

Council members expressed their unwavering support for the United Nations Special Envoy for Yemen, calling on the parties to urgently agree to mediation proposals, reaffirming Resolution 2532, and expressing support for the call of the United Nations Secretary-General to stop hostilities.

The Security Council also expressed grave concern over the increased danger that might lead to the cracking or explosion of the (Safer) oil tanker, and over conflicting Houthi statements regarding the United Nations’ access to the tanker.
