Washington said it is now up to Iran to make hard decisions in order to restore the 2015 deal on limiting its nuclear program in exchange for lifting sanctions, media reported.

State Department spokesperson Ned Price said that “the onus is on Tehran to make decisions that it might consider difficult,” as the nuclear talks are nearing a year since it began.

“There are a number of difficult issues that we are still trying to work through,” he told reporters at daily news briefing.

“An agreement of this sort is neither imminent nor is it certain and so, that is precisely why for the better part of the year, we have been preparing for either contingency,” Price said.

He said Washington had long been discussing “alternatives” with its partners in the Middle East and Europe.

Earlier, Price said that the US was prepared to make difficult decisions to return Iran’s nuclear program to its JCPOA limits.

A deal to restore the pact limiting Iran’s nuclear program is not imminent, but Washington is prepared to take “difficult decisions” to make it happen, Price said.

He said the key US negotiator, Rob Malley, has not returned to Vienna to resume the most recent round of negotiations.

Price said there has been significant progress in the nuclear talks in recent weeks, but he said “I want to be clear that an agreement is neither imminent nor is it certain.”
