BIMSTEC Summit: PM Modi, Min Aung Hlaing Discuss Relief and Ties

April 4, 2025

PM Modi had expressed his deep sorrow over the disaster and directly conveyed condolences to Min Aung Hlaing, reaffirming India’s commitment to supporting Myanmar during this difficult period

Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Myanmar’s Senior General Min Aung Hlaing on the sidelines of the BIMSTEC Summit in Bangkok, where they discussed ways to strengthen bilateral relations and coordinated efforts for relief in the wake of the recent devastating earthquake that struck Myanmar.

This marks the first bilateral meeting between the two leaders during PM Modi’s third term in office.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), PM Modi shared details of the meeting, stating, “Met Senior General Min Aung Hlaing of Myanmar on the sidelines of the BIMSTEC Summit in Bangkok. Once again expressed condolences on the loss of lives and damage of property in the wake of the recent earthquake.”

PM Modi added, “India is doing whatever is possible to assist our sisters and brothers of Myanmar in this critical time.”

Following the powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake, which claimed over 3,000 lives, India quickly mobilized Operation Brahma to provide immediate assistance. This response is in line with India’s “Neighbourhood First” and “Act East” policies. As part of the operation, India has dispatched medical supplies and relief materials to Myanmar, positioning itself as one of the first responders to the crisis.

Earlier, PM Modi had expressed his deep sorrow over the disaster and directly conveyed condolences to Min Aung Hlaing, reaffirming India’s commitment to supporting Myanmar during this difficult period.

In addition to earthquake relief efforts, the two leaders also explored avenues to enhance cooperation between their countries, particularly in areas such as connectivity, capacity building, and infrastructure development.

“We also discussed bilateral relations between India and Myanmar, particularly in sectors like connectivity, capacity building, infrastructure development, and more,” PM Modi wrote on X.

The meeting at the BIMSTEC Summit underscores the growing cooperation between India and Myanmar, with a focus on humanitarian aid and strengthening economic ties.
