Khalid Mohammed Sharif, Assistant Director General of Dubai Municipality for Environment, Health and Safety Control Sector on Sunday inaugurated the GCC Food Safety Week celebrations at Dubai Municipality Headquarters, which was organized with a wide range of activities.
The activities, organized with the aim of creating food safety awareness among the Municipality employees, with the participation of IKEA, Al Marai, Lulu Hypermarket, Baskin Robins, Uber eats and Ph7 Catering, included a model kitchen set up by IKEA at the Municipality reception lounge to provide the employees with kitchen safety tips. During the opening ceremony, the Food Safety Department also displayed six important dining out tips for consumers.
Al Marai provided safe grocery tips through its fridges distributed all over the city in the groceries and supermarkets while Uber eats distributed leaflets containing food delivery safety tips to 2,000 of its orders to spread awareness about the importance of food safety when delivering food to homes. Lulu provided vouchers as prizes for the winners of the food safety competition.
April 15 officially marks GCC Food Safety Day, but, to ensure that all stakeholders in the food chain are covered, Dubai Municipality has decided to expand this day for an entire week. “Since food safety is the primary concern of any society, we are trying our best to engage all segments of the society through a wide array of events we have lined up for the GCC Food Safety Week, which will last until 19th April,” said Iman Ali Al Bastaki, Director of Food Safety Department at Dubai Municipality.
She hoped that the Municipality’s events will have a positive impact as they are targeted at all stakeholders, the food industry, food outlets, and above all the general public.
Activities of the GCC Food Safety Week will also include a seminar on Food Safety Trends at Dubai World Trade Centre, which will be addressed by food safety experts. The seminar, to be held on 18th April from 9 AM to 2 PM, will be attended by Persons in Charge (PiCs) and hygiene managers of foodstuff establishments, officials of foodstuff manufacturing companies, 5-star hotels, restaurants and other food outlets.
In its third edition of Food Safety Trends seminar, Dubai Municipality will be presenting the latest issues and solutions surrounding food safety. As part of its vision to gain a better and holistic view of food safety, the Food Safety Department will cover a plethora of issues ranging from certification of PiCs, nutrition and latest technological advancements in food safety.
Throughout the GCC Food Safety Week food safety tips will be posted on Dubai Municipality social media channels in order to create awareness among the public, who can look forward to learn new tips, basically on dining out. The tips will focus on the safety aspects to be taken care of while having outdoor dining sessions.
On 19th April, the Municipality will take the foods safety message to the restaurants by organizing a food safety awareness workshop for restaurants. The workshop, to be held at the Municipality’s Al Twar Centre, is aimed at helping them improve their performance rating and reach higher standards. The day-long program will include classes by Municipality food inspectors in multiple languages as per the preference of the audience.
The Municipality has also requested Food Safety managers of hotels and restaurants to organize food safety events in their establishments involving staff members, customers, and suppliers on the first day of the GCC Food Safety Week and run the activities throughout the week if possible.
