Kerala Shines at Sharjah Book Fair

With a battalion of writers, publishers and media personalities, the south Indian state of Kerala grabbed the limelight of 36th edition of Sharjah Book Fair….reports Iqbal Azeez .

The south Indian state of Kerala was in the main stream Arab news because of Sharjah Ruler His Highness Sheikh Sultan bin Mohamed Al Qasimi’s visit to the state and his friendly relationship with Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. The visit was echoed at the venue, Sharjah Expo Centre, as he released a book written by John Brittas, Managing Director of Kairali Television. The book titled Sultan of Letters contains interviews with the Sharjah Ruler His Highness Sheikh Sultan, Chief Minister Vijayan, super star Mammooty, business tycoon MA Yusuf Ali.

The 36th edition of Sharjah International Book Fair (SIBF 2017)

The 36th edition of Sharjah International Book Fair (SIBF 2017) was inaugurated by the Sharjah Ruler on November 1. A major highlight of the 11-day event is a special Kids Programme  delivered by more than 44 artistes and performers from 22 countries around the globe.

The 36th edition of SIBF contains 1,650 publishing houses from 60 countries. More than 1.5 million titles were on display throughout the 11-day fair at Expo Centre Sharjah. SIBF is the world’s third largest book fair with a span over 14,625 square metres and featuring 393 guests from 48 countries in 2,600 events.

The Sharjah Ruler was in the forefront to encourage organisors and participants. He praised KM Abbas, editor-in-charge of Siraj Malayalam daily.

“I was humbled by the Sharjah ruler’s kind gesture to appreciate my effort,” Abbas told Asian Lite. “My book is an attempt to portray the wise leaders of Emirate and reflect on their compassion to support the humanity.”

Abbas, an author of several books, thanked Sharjah Book Authority Chairman Ahmad bin Rakkad al Aamiri and Advocate YA Rahim, President of Indian Association, for their support.

The fair was dotted with the release of sevral Malayalam titles. Well-known writers CV Balakrishnan, film director Kamalaudheen,  writers Honey Bhaskaran, Sathyan Madakara, Ismail Melady, besides Mathrubhumi Managing Director Shreyas Kumar were also present at various venues.
