The UAE amnesty has given hope to the section of the society that is often unheard or unnoticed. Since the amnesty has begun, we hear stories of how migrant workers have decided to approach the government to make their stay legal in the country.

Some wish to return home without being fined but most are hoping to formalise their status and return to legal employment.

Representatives were appointed by the Government of Kerala to offer free air tickets for migrant workers departing UAE through the amnesty. Various Indian organisations in the UAE like NORKA (Non-Resident Keralites’ Affairs Department) will facilitate the offer.

The nine amnesty centres have seen in many who come to take advantage of the offer. The list includes construction workers, sales people, engineers, receptionists and domestic workers.

The money sent by the migrant workers form a big part of economy in home countries like India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Philippines and Sri Lanka.

The amnesty which comes in the ‘Year of Zayed’ reiterates UAE’s commitment to help those in need and imbibes the vision laid out by Sheikh Zayed.

UAE had earlier also offered amnesty to residents staying illegally in 2007 and 2013.
